Cork's Grammy-nominated Opera Conductor: 'The Day Before the Awards is the Best Fun'
Elaine Kelly, an opera conductor from Cork, will be joined by her mother and sister as she attends the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles this Sunday. Kelly, who hails from the Mallow area, has been nominated for an award in the Best Opera Recording category for Emma O'Halloran's opera double bill, 'Trade/Mary Motorhead'.
The awards in this category are presented to the conductor, album producer(s), principal soloists, composer, and librettist (if applicable) of a world premiere opera recording. In total, six individuals have been nominated for 'Trade/Mary Motorhead', which was produced, recorded, and primarily led by the Irish National Opera.
Kelly holds the distinction of being the first Irish conductor to be nominated for a Grammy, an honor she received last year for her work in the Best Choral Performance category with 'Akathist'.
In a recent radio interview, Kelly described the Grammys as a "surreal, ridiculous, champagne-filled blur." The awards recognize outstanding achievements in the music industry.
The ceremony will feature two sessions on Sunday: one in the afternoon and another in the evening. Kelly's category is scheduled for the afternoon session, where 90% of the awards are presented, encompassing all music genres and taking place at the Peacock Theatre in LA. The evening telecast will be held at the nearby Crypto Arena, with nominees including Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, Chappell Roan, and Justin Bieber.
Kelly shared her excitement, recalling her experience last year. She believes that the day before the awards, known as the Nominee Celebration, is the most enjoyable part. It's a party where nominees receive their Tiffany medals, fostering a sense of camaraderie among attendees, regardless of the outcome.
"So by Sunday, when you go into the awards, you'll know people a bit better," Kelly said. "I remember being so excited to be at the Grammys last year. It's the same this year."
Kelly is proud that the contemporary librettos in the nominated opera, based on plays by Emma O'Halloran's uncle Mark O'Halloran, are sung in Irish accents with real place names referenced. This is a unique feature in opera, as singers typically use a neutral accent. Kelly's attention to detail in capturing the essence of the midlands accent in 'Mary Motorhead' and the north inner city Dublin accent in 'Trade' adds depth to the performances.
Elaine will be dressed to impress on the red carpet, wearing a stunning outfit provided by Phoenix V on Cork's Maylor Street. As a conductor, she is particular about her public attire, and Phoenix V has gifted her a half-suit, half-gown ensemble in silver-grey. The outfit features trousers, a structured bodice, and a dramatic train at the back.
Kelly distinguishes the Grammys award ceremonies from the Oscars, noting that the Grammys encourage more experimental and bold fashion choices. She is thrilled at the prospect of meeting classical composers whose recordings she admires. The evening telecast provides a unique opportunity to interact with celebrities, as evidenced by last year's encounters with Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and Chappell Roan.
Being nominated for a Grammy has significantly boosted Kelly's career, especially in the classical music world. She emphasizes that few people pursue a career in conducting, and the nomination has elevated her profile, garnered international recognition, and opened doors to new opportunities.
Kelly's nomadic lifestyle, fueled by her passion for her work, is a testament to her dedication. She embraces the constant travel, finding joy in exploring new places. Her suitcase is always packed, ready for her next adventure, whether it's LA, Australia, Dublin, or Dubai. Kelly relishes the freedom to be anywhere, and she's content with her current situation, knowing that her circumstances may change as she ages.
Kelly's musical journey began at a young age. At just two and a half, she started learning the violin, influenced by her mother's interest in music. Despite having no family ties to the music industry, her mother exposed her to various genres, from opera and ballet to pop and rock concerts. Kelly's dedication led her to join youth orchestras and choirs, and she studied violin at the MTU Cork School of Music.
Her introduction to conducting came through her mentor, Alan Cutts, who recognized her natural talent. Kelly's preference for playing in orchestras over solo performances led to her discovery by Cutts, who saw her passion for conducting. Initially unsure about pursuing conducting as a career, Kelly decided to delve into it, and Cutts supported her decision, allowing her to join the conducting class. She later earned a Master's degree in conducting at the Cork School of Music.
Kelly's story is one of determination and passion, and her nomination for a Grammy is a testament to her talent and hard work. As she prepares for the awards, she embraces the excitement and camaraderie of the Nominee Celebration, looking forward to making new connections and creating lasting memories.
