Regan Grace's Rugby Journey: Overcoming Setbacks and Shattering Injuries (2026)

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Regan Grace, the Welsh international rugby player, has been dealt another severe blow in what has been a tumultuous career full of challenges. The 29-year-old athlete recently expressed that he currently lacks all the answers he seeks, following yet another setback that leaves his future in question.

Once a promising talent on the rugby field, Grace has faced a string of unfortunate injuries since transitioning from rugby league to rugby union in the summer of 2022. This change came after he left St Helens to join Racing 92, a club in France's Top 14 league. However, his journey took a difficult turn when he ruptured his Achilles tendon right before the move, leading to a lengthy period of rehabilitation. Unfortunately, he never got the chance to don the Racing 92 jersey as the same injury recurred while he was recovering.

After brief stints with Bath and Cardiff, Grace signed a temporary contract with Sale Sharks in November. Regrettably, his injury-plagued career has limited him to just nine appearances over the past three years. One of those rare appearances was during Wales' 2024 tour of Australia, where he made his international debut in a non-cap match against the Queensland Reds, scoring a try but also sustaining a hamstring injury in the process.

Now, the talented athlete from Port Talbot is facing another significant hurdle; earlier this week, he re-injured his Achilles, but this time it was on the opposite leg. On Thursday night, Grace took to Instagram to announce that he would be undergoing surgery on Friday, which means he will need to spend even more time sidelined.

"Unfortunately, I’ve suffered another Achilles injury this week on the opposite side to my previous one," he shared in his post. "So I'll be having surgery tomorrow. After putting everything into getting back on the pitch following multiple setbacks, this is a tough one to process. I’m still finding my feet mentally and figuring out what the next chapter looks like.

"I have a deep love for rugby; if I didn't, I would have walked away a long time ago. However, I understand that the road ahead will not be smooth," Grace continued.

He expressed immense gratitude for the support he receives, particularly from his partner, Nina, acknowledging that it means more to him than words can convey. "I genuinely give my all to the sport. I don’t have all the answers right now, but I will keep moving forward. Regs."

This news comes shortly after Grace spoke to The Times, reiterating his commitment to pursuing his rugby dreams "as long as my body allows," despite having previously questioned his ability to bounce back from the numerous injuries he has experienced. He recalled a particularly emotional moment at Racing when staff members were moved to tears after witnessing him re-tear his Achilles while jogging, months into his recovery.

“I know that all the staff there knew how hard I tried to make it work,” Grace reflected. “When I snapped my Achilles a second time, the staff were literally crying. That’s the part of my career that leaves me gutted.

“If I looked at all the injuries I’ve had, I probably would have thought I’d never get through that,” he added. “But I’m proud of myself for having overcome so much while maintaining a positive outlook. In situations like these, you either keep pushing forward or walk away from the game.

People often ask me if I want to give up, but the truth is, I still love rugby. So, as long as my body permits, I plan to keep going strong. I know there’s still plenty of drive left in me!"
